Come to Heysham Heritage Centre to learn about Heysham’s fascinating past

History

Built in the early 1600s, Heysham Heritage Centre was was a small farm called a Lancashire ‘long house’. This is where a farmhouse and a barn are built together in a line.

Its ancient history is now lost, however the farm probably dates further back, to medieval times.

The inside of the farmhouse contains a oak beams and a stone fireplace from the 1700s. As the village grew, it swallowed up the farm and it’s land. Consequently, the long house was converted into a cottage and two lock up shops, numbers 22,  24 and 26 Main Street.

The Heritage Centre was formerly a Lancashire ‘long house’ of the 1600s.

Restoration

Heritage Trust for the North West acquired the lock up shops in 1999, and converted them into a Heritage Centre for Heysham Village. Hundreds and thousands of people have since visited Heysham Heritage Centre.

In 2005, the Trust obtained the adjoining cottage. Then the cottage was carefully conserved and so the two parts of the 15th century farm were reunited once more.

The Centre and its archive are run entirely by volunteers from Heysham Heritage Association.

The farmhouse is available to rent as a holiday cottage. For further information use the form below.

Owing to the impact of Covid-19, please telephone 01524 853465 before visiting. Heysham Heritage Centre is on Main Street in Lower Heysham.
